An early Jess Franco WIP movie and to be a Franco WIP
a pretty well made and serious one. With some of
the prisoners even felt "alive" in their roles as prisoner
76 Rosalba Neri giving a fine performance, and with
some good actors as Herbert Lom and Mercedes McCambridge
where the latter one gives a delightfully
unhinged performance as the evil Superintendant Thelma Díaz.
Unfortunately the luscious Luciana Paluzzi
(one of my favourite Bond girls and villains ever in the 1965
" Thunderball") is hardly in the film as Prisoner 98, Nathalie,
but gorgeous Maria Rohm as Prisoner 99 and
Rosalba Neri as Prisoner 76 Zoé are. And Yes, there are some
sleaze and nudity too.
Three women are jailed for 3 years and transported to
the old spanish "Castle of Death" on some Latin
American island, they are Prisoner 97 (Eliza Montes), Prisoner 98 (Luciana
Paluzzi) and Prisoner 99, Marie
(Maria Rohm). Governor Santos (Herbert Lom) and Superintendent Díaz
(Mercedes McCambridge) rules
the island. They are evil and/or crazy and the Governor's hobby is to
rape the prisoners.
But, a new warden arrives from the mainland, Leonie Carroll (Maria Schell)
and starts challenging Santos
and Díaz regime. Carroll is a liberal and starts softening up
the routines, and when she removes the night
guards 3 prisoners manage to escape, No. 97, 99 and 76. Soundtrack by
Bruno Nicolai
